There are a wide variety of membranes, which vary greatly in performance. Only 80-95% of dissolved solids are removed and bacteria can easily get through worn rubber seals or tears due to the high pressures used.
Membranes that are old or not correctly protected from certain chemicals in all tap water become far less efficient and break down quickly. Leading R.O. companies commonly have dissolved contaminant reading in excess of 25 micro ohms compared to 0.1 to 0.2 for distilled.
